Regional leaders share the thoughts that keep them motivated during COVID-19

In times of crisis, people look to their leaders for motivation and guidance. But what gives leaders the strength to keep calm and carry on? Atlantic Business asked several prominent Atlantic Canadians to share their thoughts.

Sheri Somerville: It’s heart-warming to see the Atlantic Canadian spirit of giving rise up during this challenging time. Despite the very real hardships that many of our families, friends or neighbours may be facing (or are expecting to face), we’re hearing amazing stories of people, businesses and communities supporting each other.  I love Atlantic Canada. There really in no place quite like it.

Mickey MacDonald: As leaders, we must stand tall and keep our wits about us. If we show fear or uncertainty, people around us will panic. Our greatest threat is fear itself! One foot in front of the other and we will be through this before we know it. No fear—into the unknown we go with only our wits and good judgement to guide us.

Jamie Baillie: “When the going gets tough, the tough keep going.” This is one of my favourite quotes. It combines the immediate need to go one step at a time with the longer term vision of a better future that we all need when times get tough.

Leaders are people who both live in the present but can also see and mold the future. The best leaders don’t sugar-coat the predicament we are in, but they also inspire confidence that things will get better. Leaders let us know that we will get through this. They remind us that we are at our best when challenged, and that by working together we can ensure the better future that seems so remote today. This is true of our families, our companies, and even our country.

In other words: We are all in this together. We will get through this. There are better days ahead.
